Seniors Centre, 176 Russell St

Possibly Monday 8 April, stay tuned, you will receive an email when the renovations finish.

You will be aware from the last issue of Chimes that our Group is in the process of finalising arrangements for the use of two rooms in the Seniors Citizens Centre at 176 Russell Street.

One of these rooms will be secure, enabling us to store all our assets. Power points are currently being upgraded in these rooms which will enable us to utilise both the Group’s computers & those of members. We have already connected an Nbn internet WiFi outlet that all members will be able to use.

The Group has recently received a $5,000 grant through State Member, Paul Toole. This establishment grant will enable us to: purchase an overhead scanner which is capable of scanning open books & documents up to A3; book shelving, chairs & other furniture.

Electronic research afternoons for members & non-members are still planned to be held at the Library on Tuesdays from 2 – 4 pm, however, our books will be relocated from the library to our new home.

Some days will be more readily available than others at the centre, however, we are hoping to facilitate a number of special interest groups during the week, weekend or at night, depending on the interests of members & the availability of the centre & organisers.

Some suggestions have been: general family history research; how to build family trees; using Ancestry, Trove, Ryersons, & the numerous other on-line resources etc. for research; DNA workshop; writing family history (what to do next with my research).

The committee would be pleased to hear from you of any subjects you may be interested in looking at.

It is hoped that the new rooms will be available for use shortly & the committee have therefore planned our first general use on Monday April 8, not March 25 as was previously indicated.

The suggestion is that members can turn up from 10am for morning tea, a chat & look at the new facilities.

Then for those interested we will hold a basic DNA workshop from 11 am for those who have not been tested & want to know what is involved, together with those who have recently got there results back & want to know what to do next.

The Seniors Citizens Centre is located down a laneway in the centre of the block at 176 Russell St., between George & Rankin Sts. (see map)
