By JOYCE PEARCE 1979The first gold discovery was made at Golden Point a quarter of a mile east of the present village three weeks after the Ophir strike in 1851. In Sofala's heyday of the 1850's and 60's there were 30,000 white people and 10,000 Chinese living or existing there.
